NAVAL STATION NORFOLK, Va., Aug. 8, 2000 – The Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department here will host an inaugural all-military Wilderness Challenge Oct. 6-8 in Fayetteville, W.Va.
"With the popularity and growth in outdoor recreation by the military sector, MWR decided to design a program to promote outdoor adventure along with physical readiness and competition," MWR event coordinator Michael Bond said.
The Wilderness Challenge is four races testing competitors' endurance, strength and speed over a two-day period in the mountains of West Virginia. The challenge consists of a 6.2-mile night hike, a 40-mile mountain bike relay, a whitewater raft race and a 5.5-mile run.
The competition is open to all branches of the military. Each team will consist of five active duty military members with one member being female. There is a space limit of 30 teams for this competition and not more than two teams can come from any one installation.
"We consider this a great opportunity for commands from all branches of the armed forces to display their best sailors, soldiers, Marines and airmen in a highly physical competition," Bond said. "We look forward to this becoming a popular annual event that commands and teams will be hungry to earn bragging rights for the title.
"It won't be an easy competition and only the strong will survive, so the winning team will be the best of the best in outdoor recreation and physical endurance.
