Regulations

NOAA Fisheries Office for Law Enforcement is responsible for the enforcement of a majority of the regulations concerned with the protection and conservation of our nation's living marine resources.

These numerous regulations encompass the protection of endangered and threatened marine species, the importation of products harvested from the oceans of the world and our nation's 13 National Marine Sanctuaries - to name a few.

These regulations are also responsible for the detailed management of commercial and recreational fishing within the 200-mile U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and when pertaining to specified fisheries. These regulations control fishing seasons, closed areas, types of gear authorized targeted species and by-catch.
