NIH Response to the Recommendations

In response to the recommendations of the March mouse genomics and genetics resources Working Group, Dr. Varmus established a Steering Committee comprising representatives from the various Institutes and Centers (IC) at NIH. The Steering Committee, co-chaired by Dr. Elke Jordan (Deputy Director, NHGRI) and Dr. James Battey (Director, NIDCD), was charged with generating a plan to implement the recommendations. At the initial meetings of the Steering Committee, an inventory of ongoing and planned IC activities was taken to assess the current level of implementation. Members of the mouse genomics and genetics resources Working Group including the two chairs, Drs. William Dove and David Cox, will be invited back to review this current level of implementation and give advice to the NIH leadership on the priority and means for addressing recommendations not fully accounted for in the current and planned activities. This advice will guide Dr. Varmus and the Steering Committee in the design and execution of new research and training initiatives to help make the mouse a more valuable and useful tool for understanding mammalian biology.
