NOAA-19 launched on Friday, February 6, 2009
NOAA-19 Launch: NOAA-19 was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 10:22 GMT (5:22AM EST) on Friday, February 6, 2009. Launch activities were closely monitored by NOAA and NASA personnel at the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility (NSOF) in Suitland, MD. The Launch Control Team at the NSOF took control of the satellite after separation from the launch vehicle and began a 45 day post launch activation and testing period. During this period, the team will check out all of the satellites instruments which will be used for producing products used for local, national, and global weather and climate forecasting. The first imagery from NOAA-19 was acquired at 16:37GMT (11:37AM EST).
NOAA-19 is the last in the series of NOAA satellites that have served the Nation well since April 1, 1960, when the world's first weather satellite was launched by NASA. The spacecraft will join NOAA-15, NOAA-16, NOAA-17, NOAA-18 as an operational spacecraft at the end of the 45 day testing period.
