Description:

The California Central Valley Recovery Domain extends from the upper Sacramento River Valley to the northern portion of the San Joaquin River Valley.

Specific threats to Pacific salmon and steelhead populations include:

  • Lack of access to 95 percent of historic steelhead spawning and rearing habitat above dams

  • Wide-spread stocking of hatchery reared fish

  • Inadequately screened diversions

  • Elevated water temperatures below dams and diversions

  • Predation by non-native species, and

  • Point and non-point pollution from mining and agricultural operations

 Priority recovery actions include:

  • Restoring access above impassible dams for both Central Valley Steelhead and Chinook

  • Establishment of additional populations of Winter-run Chinook

  • Modification of hatchery stocking practices for both Central Valley Steelhead and Spring-run Chinook

  • Development of and implementation of a comprehensive monitoring and assessment program for Central Valley Steelhead

  • Screening appropriate water diversions and providing adequate downstream flows
