IGF-I as an indicator of growth rate in salmonids

IGF-I Indicator of Growth

Project Title
IGF-I as an indicator of growth rate in salmonids

Description
Insulin-like growth factor-I is one of the primary endocrine mediators of somatic growth. This work is two-fold. Laboratory work consists of rearing fish under different environmental conditions (feeding rate, feed composition, temperature) and testing whether IGF-I is related to growth under the given circumstances. In addition, blood from juvenile salmon has been collected from coastal water of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia as well as the Puget Sound and Strait of Georgia. Plasma IGF-I levels are being compared to scale and otolith increments to establish IGF-I as a growth index in the ocean. Geographic and inter-annual differences in plasma IGF-I levels are also being established.
