Black Hills Mining Museum

Located on Lead's Main Street, the Black Hills Mining Museum is a non-profit educational corporation dedicated to the preservation of the rich mining heritage of the Black Hills of South Dakota. One of the main activities provided is an extensive simulated underground mine level, constructed by over 140 present and former Homestake Mining Company employees and other volunteers. The 50-minute guided tour of this exhibit area provides visitors with a comprehensive look at mining techniques from the 1870's up to more modern technology. The main floor of the museum contains a wealth of photographs and maps and interesting exhibits and working models concerning Black Hills mines and the city of Lead, as well as a video theater with a 20-minute video presentation. Prior to the guided tours, visitors may enjoy a gold panning demonstration, or, for those who wish to obtain a sample of placer gold of their own, our hands-on gold panning exhibit is available. (Gold Guaranteed!)

The Black Hills Mining Museum also has an extensive archives with thousands of documents dating mainly from 1876-1940. Included are records of the Homestake Mining Company, Deadwood-Terra Mining Company, Caledonia Mining Company, Highland Mining Company, Giant & Old Abe Mining Company, Black Hills Canal & Water Company and the Wasp Mining Company.

The museum is open all year: May - September, daily 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; October - April, Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Limited winter tour schedule; check for times.
