Interagency Committee on Smoking and Health
Meeting Summary: November 6, 2003
Public and Private Sector Roles in Tobacco Use Reduction
Public Comments
Following the member comments, Dr. Carmona asked for public comments.
Lyndon Haviland, American Legacy Foundation, directed a question to Dr. Carmona asking what
he will do as Surgeon General to insure that youth prevalence rates will continue to
decline, especially in the face of state budget crises. Dr. Carmona responded by reiterating
his personal commitment to the issue because of his own secondhand smoke-related illnesses
as a child. He also believes that as Surgeon General his job is to translate good science in
a culturally appropriate manner to the American public. He believes that prevention should
always come first.
With no additional public comments, Dr. Carmona turned back to any additional comments from
committee members.
