Los Alamos Earth and Space Science Academy

The LAESSA program is a professional development experience designed for teachers working at the middle school level. Selected participants will come to Los Alamos National Laboratory for three 4-week summer sessions involving classroom, laboratory, and field-based research activities. The first session is scheduled for July 6 - 31 2009. The program is delivered as one site for the US Department of Energy Office of Science Academies Creating Teacher Scientists (ACTS) program. See the ACTS program web site for additional information regarding the program and application process.

Participants selected to join the LAESSA program will work directly with scientists from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in order to master content knowledge and scientific methodologies in both Earth and space science. See the LAESSA Program Description for a more detailed account of the specific content areas included in the program. In addition to the science content teacher participants will be provided with demonstrations and interactive opportunities to practice delivering effective Earth and space science content.
