Utah State Archives Research

The outcome of any serious research can only be to make two questions grow where only one grew before.

—Thorstein Veblen (1857 - 1929)

The Utah State Archives preserves and provides access to records of enduring historical value from state and local government agencies. Research services are provided in cooperation with Utah State History in a joint Research Center. The full time staff there is eager to assist in finding information both from local and state historic government records and within the collections of Utah State History (Utah State Historical Society).

Research Guides

Each article includes explanations, lists of relevant records and links to additional information.

Finding Aids

  • Descriptions of Archives records known as Finding Aids which provide information on scope and content, gaps, related records and container lists.
  • Histories of the creation, organization and function of state and local government agencies are online.
  • Online Indexes searchable by personal or company name. Keep in mind that many, many records and materials available from the Archives are not indexed in this manner, however these electronic indexes are a popular and easy way to begin research.

Digital Archives

Online Catalog

Find keywords in any title, creator, or description of records held by the Archives. Because of the nature of archival records, do not expect each individual item in various formats to be searchable in the catalog. Generally, groups of records known as series from the same creating government agency are described.

Curious about what we have? Browse through exhibits and other highlights. We would also be happy to arrange a tour for groups or anyone else.
