Utah Schools Earn Medals

Across Utah, 219 elementary schools received Gold Medal School (GMS) recognition and 9 junior/middle schools received the Power-Up recognition. The schools are among a total of 334 schools committed to creating a healthier generation by making policy changes that inspire faculty, students, and the community to get more physical activity, eat better, and live a tobacco-free life.

Emergency fishing change protects rare cutthroat trout population

What could be the first population of greenback cutthroat trout ever found in Utah will get some added protection through a change to the state's fishing rules.

Division of Wildlife Resources Director Jim Karpowitz signed the emergency change this week. The change takes effect May 1.

Famous peregrine falcon pair back in Salt Lake City

Downtown Salt Lake City's famous pair of peregrine falcons is back.

You can watch their antics by logging onto the Division of Wildlife Resources' Web site. Right now, the falcons are caring for three eggs the female has laid in a nest box on the northeast corner of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building

Report Shows Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Cases are Skyrocketing in Utah

A new Utah Department of Health (UDOH) report shows that chlamydia and gonorrhea cases are on the rise in the Beehive State. The report finds that chlamydia cases rose by 50 percent while gonorrhea cases nearly doubled during the last five years.

While no cases of swine influenza (H1N1) have been documented in Utah, public health officials are taking a proactive approach in order to be prepared for a possible outbreak. CDC is reporting 141 cases of swine flu in five states.

Utah communities get stimulus money for drinking water

Several Utah communities are moving forward with improvements to their drinking water systems after the Drinking Water Board recently authorized $32.2 million, including federal stimulus funding, for construction of drinking water projects. These funds will be combined with other sources of revenue to construct $78.7 million worth of projects.

Park City School District School Closure Effective Immediately

Dr. Ray Timothy, the Superintendent of Schools of the Park City School District, after consultation with the Park City Board of Education and health professionals throughout the state, has closed, effective immediately, all eight schools in the Park City School District.
