CNS ABSTRACT DEADLINE EXTENDED ONE WEEK TO APRIL 14!

The deadline for submitting abstracts of papers to be considered for presentation at the 38TH Annual Meeting of the Child Neurology Society has been extended one week to April 14, 2009. The meeting will be held October 14-17, 2009 at the Louisville Marriott Downtown Hotel. The approved Calendar of Events for the meeting will be posted in this space on Tuesday, April 7.

Junior Members in training are reminded that abstracts submitted by them and accepted for presentation (for which they are identified as first author) will receive a full registration fee waiver. The top four ranked abstracts submitted by Junior Members still in an approved pediatric neurology training program as of April 14 will qualify for the Outstanding Junior Member Award with waived registration fee, and full hotel/airfare provided.

APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR ACNN CLAIRE CHEE AWARD

The Claire Chee Award for Excellence in Child Neurology Nursing was established by the Association of Child Neurology Nurses in the year 2000. This award, given annually, recognizes and honors the nurse who, as a member of the ACNN, has rendered distinguished service within the profession of child neurology nursing. The recipient is one who demonstrates, through strength of character and competence, a commitment to the care of children and their families with neurological disorders. She/he is acknowledged by her/his peers as one who renders qualities of compassion, resourcefulness, leadership, knowledge, communication, and inspiration.

Candidates for the Award for Excellence may be submitted by any member of the Association of Child Neurology Nurses or the Child Neurology Society to the Award Committee. The Award Committee will evaluate the nominations and determine the most deserving candidate for the year. The Award will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Child Neurology Nurses. Please submit nominations by April 30, 2009 using the ACNN nomination form posted on the CNS website Annual Meeting page; you may also request a copy directly from Tamara H. Langhoff, RN, MS, CPNP (langhoff@mcw.edu).

Comment on Draft Clinical Performance Measures for Epilepsy

The Child Neurology Society, in conjunction with the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), needs your expert opinion on eight performance measures developed for epilepsy. The 30-day open public comment period runs from noon on February 11 to 6:00 ET on March 12, 2009.

The epilepsy measures include: Seizure Type and Frequency, Etiology or Epilepsy Type, EEG, MRI/CT, AED Side Effects, Refractory Epilepsy Referral, Safety and Driving, and Women of Childbearing Potential.

The Child Neurology Society and AAN are committed to enhancing quality of care and patient safety by taking the lead in the development, testing, and maintenance of evidence-based clinical performance measures and measurement resources for neurologic conditions. These measures can be used by neurologists and other practitioners in quality improvement programs, or in pay-for-reporting programs such as the CMS Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI).

The 19th Annual Pediatric Neurology Update will stress clinical advances and research developments impacting the way neurologic diseases are assessed and treated. The major focus of this year’s course is pediatric epilepsy, ranging from new molecular genetic insights to innovations in care. The course will describe how new discoveries and therapeutic advances have impacted the lives of children with seizures.

  • 2009 CNS International Visiting Professor Award (Deadline: March 31)
  • 2009 Philip R. Dodge Young Investigator Award (Deadline: March 12)

In addition, all CNS members and non-CNS members are encouraged to be aware of the impending submission period for abstracts to be presented at the 38th Annual CNS Meeting, October 14-17, in Louisville, KY. Abstracts may be submitted on-line beginning on February 15. Deadline for submitting abstracts is April 7.

IN MEMORIAM: JOHN HANS MENKES

On 22 November 2008 in Los Angeles, California, one month short of his 80th birthday, the world of paediatric neurology lost an icon and one its contemporary fathers, and the World at large lost a true Renaissance Man – physician; scientist; playwright; philosopher; connaisseur of good literature, art, music and food; humanist and liberal thinker who deplored discrimination, intolerance, prejudices and false values of all types. The life he lived was as interesting and inspiring as were his contributions to paediatric neurology and his understanding of the world around him, both medical and social. He succumbed to colonic carcinoma and complications of chemotherapy. More
