About Pollution Prevention at LANL

The Pollution Prevention (P2) Program provides engineering and technical support to promote source reduction of waste and pollutants to lower operating and disposal costs, enhance safety of operations, and assure that mission work can be accomplished without waste or regulatory-related delays. The P2 Program also promotes environmentally preferable purchasing, sustainable design, lifecycle chemical management, recycling, and fuel, energy, and water conservation.

The P2 Program provides a number of services to Laboratory operations, including:

  • P2 Operational Assessments to understand waste at the source and eliminate it
  • Engineering and technical support to generators
  • Technical input of major projects
  • Generator Set-Aside Fee Program funding for waste reduction projects
  • Facilitation support and tools to support waste avoidance and process improvements
  • Waste database provides desktop access to waste generation information to help understand trends and identify targets for improvement
  • Waste Volume Forecast to understand institutional waste generation trends
