Project Number 188
Date of Summary March 31, 1993
Subject Model Design Code Development for Floating Structures
Performing Activity Conoco, Inc.
Principal Investigator Dr. Kashok Kumar
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion Completed
Description This study was a Joint Industry Project (JIP) and an advisory committee was formed to provide direction to the project. The objective of this study was to improve design practices and codes to produce safe and economical floating systems. Limit states are generally associated with rare intense events such as boat impacts, dropped objects, subsea blowouts, large hurricanes, etc., and are generally described by very long return periods. It is desired to demonstrate the ability of a floating platform system to withstand a rare intense event without significant loss of life or environmental damage. For the analysis of these types of events, the entire system capacity was used with no reserve strength or safety factors applied. The work was divided into three main activities related to loadings, strength factors, and calibration studies.
