AMERICAN FORCES INFORMATION SERVICE (AFIS)

(DoD Directive 5122.10)

        The American Forces Information Service (AFIS) reports to the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs) (ASD(PA)).  AFIS provides news, information, and entertainment to U.S. forces worldwide in order to promote and sustain unit and individual readiness, quality of life, and morale; trains public affairs, broadcast, and visual information professionals; provides communications services to support the informational needs of commanders and combat forces through the entire range of military operations and contingencies; advises and acts for the ASD(PA) in providing policy, guidelines, and management oversight of the DoD internal information programs; develops policies, guidelines, and standards for the management of the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service outlets and activities, and DoD visual information and Combat Camera activities and programs.  The Director, AFIS shall:

    l  Organize, direct, and manage AFIS and assigned resources.

    l  Serve as the Chairman of the American Forces Information Council.

    l  Organize, direct, and manage the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service-Broadcast Center, the Defense Information School, the Defense Visual Information Center, the Television-Audio Support Activity, the DoD Joint Combat Camera Center, the Current News Service, the DoD Joint Visual Information Services Distribution Activity, and the Stars and Stripes newspapers.

    l  Perform other related internal information functions that the ASD(PA) may assign.
