IIP Raises the REU Supplement Amount Effective Immediately

IIP invites its grantees to submit requests for REU supplemental funding to their active IIP grants effective immediately. In these trying economic times, REU stipend support is one means by which to retain talented students in undergraduate education while providing them with meaningful research experiences.

In the case of a single investigator project, an REU supplement typically requests support for up to two students for one year. Multi-investigator projects may request support for a larger number of students, commensurate with the size and nature of the project. For example, projects involving four PIs typically request support for about four undergraduates via REU supplements.

As a guide for budget development, student stipends can be up to $8,000 per student for the academic year, which includes $6,400 for student support and $1,600 for administrative costs. PIs are strongly encouraged to consider economic hardship as one key factor in student selection.

Grantees are encouraged to refer to the program solicitation "Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU): Sites and Supplements," for detailed information concerning submission requirements. Grantees with questions may also contact the program officer managing their grant. In the event that requests for support exceed available funds, requests will be considered in the order in which they are received (in Fastlane) along with other factors including the status of the project.
