Project Number 437
Date of Summary December 14, 2005
Subject Reliability Analysis of Deepwater Anchors
Performing Activity Det Norske Veritas
Principal Investigator Rune G. Dahlberg
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion Completed
Description

During the last 10 years, the offshore industry has shown an increasing interest in suction anchors so there is a need to calibrate safety factors for suction anchors. Suction anchors continued to be first choice, but drag-in plate anchors emerged as a potential alternative 5 years ago, especially by Petrobras in Brazil. This JIP objectives were:

  1. Structural reliability analysis for calibration of a design code for design of suction anchors,

  2. Develop design code for suction anchors and describe a model for use in the reliability analysis,

  3. Use the reliability analysis for calibration of the design code for suction anchors,

  4. Identify key issues for design of suction anchors,

  5. Document code in a DNV Recommended Practice(RP-E303), and

  6. Compare results for suction anchors with the results for plate anchors (updated DNV RP-E302).

Project Completed.
