Visiting CDC

Physical Security has developed a visitor information guide for the CDC Clifton Road facility. We recommend that visitors review this information guide prior to their visit.

All visitors to CDC must enter through the Tom Harkin Global Communication Center. Government–issued photo ID is required for entry. Please note that CDC is a working federal facility and as such does not provide public tours of its campus and laboratories.

Global Health Odyssey Museum

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention welcomes the public in to explore the world of public health at the Global Health Odyssey Museum. This exhibit space supports CDC′s mission by educating all who visit about public health and the benefits of prevention. Features include the Global Symphony and The Story of CDC, as well as rotating temporary exhibitions that focus on a variety of public health topics.

The Global Symphony is a must-see for anyone interested in CDC, the health sciences, or even multimedia technology. Spanning 100 feet in length, the installation delivers high impact—utilizing ten rearview projection screens, punctuated by eight plasma screens. The Symphony is designed to educate visitors about CDC´s efforts to combat health threats such as polio, Legionnaires´ disease, and obesity, among others.

The Story of CDC traces the origins and early history of CDC through 1986. The story is told through documents, photographs, and objects such as an early 20th century quarantine sign, the microscope of Dr. Joseph Mountin–the founder of CDC–early CDC bulletins, an iron lung, and the transmission electron microscope used to identify Ebola, hantavirus, and SARS. The exhibit will continue to grow as subsequent decades are explored.

The Global Health Odyssey Museum is open Monday–Wednesday, and Friday from 9AM to 5PM, and Thursday from 9AM to 7PM, except for federal holidays. The exhibits are self- guided, and no advance reservations are required. Parking and admission are free. All visitors to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are required to present a driver's license or passport for entry, and are subject to vehicle inspections.
