Denmark
The German Army invaded Denmark on April 9, 1940 and within days the Danish government agreed to German occupation. On August 29, 1943, the German Army disarmed the Danish Army, imprisoned King Christian X, and took control over the country's administrative functions. In early October 1943 most of the Danish Jewish population escaped to Sweden. The 400 Jews who were taken into custody by the Nazis were sent to a camp at Theresienstadt, but none wee sent to Auschwitz. However fifty-one died of natural causes while in the camp. Denmark was not recaptured by the Allies until May 1945. (Note 64)
