SPRING 2009

All Archives classes listed below are from 12 Noon - 2:00 PM unless noted.

Wednesday, 11 February - Introduction to the National Archives: Want to know how to use the National Archives to research your family history? This class introduces you to the basics. Where do you start? What are our most popular records?

Wednesday, 25 February - African-American Resources: This session will explore the resources held by NARA's Mid Atlantic Region relating to African-Americans. The primary focus of the class will look at using census records for African-American genealogical research. There will be an additional section on African-American military records during the Civil War, records of the Freedmen's Bureau and records concerning slavery and freedom from our court holdings.

Wednesday, 4 March - Exploring the Census: Most visitors to the National Archives begin their research with Census records, available from 1790-1930. You'll learn how to find your family and pave your way to further discoveries.

Wednesday, 25 March - Military Records: Battles are not won solely on the battlefield. The home front plays a large role in supporting and supplying the troops. This program will focus on the military service records available at the regional branch of the National Archives as well as records of arsenals, navy yards and military retirement homes. A special treat will be an explanation to the Civil War-era records of the Provost Marshal General just transferred to Philadelphia.

Thursday, 9 April - Extreme Genealogy: Start with an update on what's new at NARA Mid Atlantic. Then, discover unorthodox methods to help you break through genealogical brick walls. This is a special event with the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania (GSP). 11:00 - 1:00 (please note the special time!) Learn more

Wednesday, 15 April - Immigration Records: Between 1820 and 1990, over 55 million people immigrated to the United States. This program focuses on ship's passenger lists, alien registrations, special investigations and other U.S. Customs Services records. You will learn the types of information found in the records, how and where to search for records, and some tips for searching.

Wednesday, 6 May - Naturalization Records: This course will help you understand the changes in U.S. naturalization procedures over the past 200+ years, the records these procedures produced, and what you can learn from them about your ancestors.
