Digital Library Repository Team
The Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library seeks to hire a creative team player for the Digital Library Repository Team. The individual will join the team as a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA).
The Library Repository Team manages the data that is the cornerstone for the library's research applications and that populates Laboratory-wide metrics applications. The team's primary responsibilities focus on analysis of the data that is ingested, procurement of additional datasets through harvesting and web-crawling, transformation of complex objects, quality assurance and preservation, and cross-team coordination for indexing and use.
The successful candidate will engage in varied assignments within the Digital Library Repository Team. The team primarily leverages new and existing tools and standards to populate and safeguard the Research Library's Digital Repository. Accordingly, the responsibilities of this position include:
- Working independently and in small teams to analyze, transform, and validate data migration projects
- Performing complex content validation
- Investigating and assisting in implementation of standards and practices for digital rights management
- Maintaining, reviewing, and updating the Team's code base while assisting in the migration to new repository software products
- Identifying data sources for content ingestion and performing proof-of-concept retrieval.
Required skills, knowledge, abilities
- Experience with Perl, Unix Shell Scripting, Java, and DBMS/SQL;
- Experience with XML, XSLT, and schemas;
- Experience with information science standards and practices (e.g. ISO2709, MARCXML, AACR-2, W3C schema recommendations);
- Understanding of digital library standards (OpenURL, OAI-PMH, MPEG-21, Premis, MODS, METS, etc);
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team leader and with members of a technical team in achieving common goals;
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in analyzing problems, proposing, and implementing solutions for detail-oriented, complex projects;
- Demonstrated effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Desired skills, knowledge, abilities
- Facility with the tools needed to document and model workflow and processes (wikis, blogs, html, javascript, graphics design software, etc);
- Experience with and/or investigation into web-crawling and harvesting tools.
Education
- B.A. or B.S. degree in Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field
- Enrollment in or recent completion of a graduate program in Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field
