Digital Library Applications Team

The Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library seeks to hire a creative team player for the Digital Library Applications Team. The individual will join the team as a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA).

The purpose of the Digital Library Applications Team is to enhance scientific research productivity through enabling digital library technologies, which integrate user applications and digital content. Current projects focus on increasing the richness of the scientific literature available to LANL scientists as well as the means in which that literature can be used in a collaborative research process.

The successful candidate will have a mix of assignments within the Digital Library Applications team. That team focuses using cutting-edge concepts defined in Digital Library, Computer Science and Information Science research to build digital library applications to be used by high-end scientific researchers.

Specifically, this position includes:

  • Developing tools for disseminating various representations of scholarly assets stored in the LANL Repository, including but not limited to search, taxonomy browse, deduplication tools, etc.;
  • Developing capabilities to facilitate a deeper integration of scholarly assets stored in the LANL repository into the research process, including tools that support personalized access to and interaction with assets
Required skills, knowledge, abilities
  • Programming experience in JAVA, Perl, and XSLT
  • Experience in building XML-based applications and in using XML tools;
  • Experience working with and developing on Linux/Unix platforms;
  • Understanding of developing software based on W3C standards such as XML Schema, SOAP, DOM, XPath, XPointer and associated tools;
  • Abilty to develop software based on other standards relevant to the work of the team: HTTP, CVS;
  • Understanding of developing relational database applications (Oracle and/or MySQL);
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team leader and with members of a technical team in achieving common goals;
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in analyzing problems, proposing and implementing solutions;
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Desired skills, knowledge, abilities
  • Understanding of and experience in developing sophisticated high- performance browser-independent Web interfaces using AJAX technologies including Javascript (DOM and xmlhttprequest), CSS, and XHTML
  • Understanding of and experience in developing software based on other standards relevant to the work of the team: RDF, DOI, handle, MPEG-21 DIDL, MPEG-21 DIP, OAI-PMH, OpenURL.
Education
  • B.A. or B.S. degree in Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Enrollment in or recent completion of a graduate program in Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field
