NEW - Swine Flu Update

5/06/09

The H1N1 Virus is a highly contagious strain of influenza.  Because this is a new virus, most people will not have immunity to it so illness may be more severe and widespread as a result. The CDC updates their swine flu information every day at 11am (Eastern) at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/swine/investigation.htm

Boards of health must be working with health agency administration on ensuring that the health agency staff understands and are comfortable with their roles in the community’s pandemic flu plans. There must be ongoing education and communication with local health practitioners. Guidance for clinicians and public health professionals can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/guidance/

CDC continues to take aggressive action to respond to an expanding outbreak caused by novel H1N1 flu.

CDC’s response goals are to:

  1. Reduce transmission and illness severity.
  2. Provide information to help health care providers, public health officials, and the public to address the challenges posed by this emergency.

CDC also has completed deployment of 25% of the supplies in the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) to all states in the continental United States. These supplies and medicines will help states and U.S. territories respond to the outbreak. In addition, the federal government and manufacturers have begun the process of developing a vaccine against the novel H1N1 flu virus.

Boards must also work with health agency administration on their Continuity of Operations Programs (COOP). More information on COOP can be found at http://www.fema.gov/government/coop/index.shtm
