Science Education Opportunities K-12

Each year, students and teachers throughout New Mexico have an opportunity to enhance and demonstrate their skills and knowledge through educational programs offered by Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Programs such as the "Go Figure Mathematic Challenge" and the "New Mexico High School Supercomputing Challenge" have identified students with incredible talent.

The Math and Science Academy (MSA) has provided teachers in three northern New Mexico school districts an opportunity to take their science and math teaching skills to the next level. Master teachers Lorenzo Gonzales, Zachary Leonard, and Carol Brown are dedicated in their efforts to help not only the teachers but also their students.

The Los Alamos Earth and Space Science Academy (LAESSA) (doc) program is designed for highly motivated middle school teachers who wish to "learn science by doing science". Selected teachers will be expected to commit to an intensive 3-year experience.

The NM High School Super Computing Challenge is a program encompassing the school year in which teams of students complete science projects using high-performance supercomputers. Each team of one to five students and a sponsoring teacher defines and works on a single computational project of its own choosing.

The Bradbury Museum staff knows that today's students are tomorrow's leaders and decision makers. With that thought in mind, the Museum has developed quality community programs that reach audiences of all ages, education levels, and ethnic backgrounds. Each community program endeavors to instill in participants—from elementary school children to young adults—a continuing scientific curiosity.
