The context for fish management changed dramatically in the last two decades with Endangered Species Act listings, new scientific information, varied climatic and ocean conditions and changing public expectations. On Nov. 8, 2002, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted, a new Native Fish Conservation Policy to govern native fish conservation and management to provide ecological, cultural, and economic benefits.

A task force now is working with staff from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to develop a draft Hatchery Management Policy, a companion policy to the newly adopted Native Fish Conservation Policy. The Commission is expected to vote on the draft Hatchery Management Policy May 9, 2003, at a regularly scheduled meeting at ODFW Headquarters at 2501 S.W. First Ave., Portland. Written comments are now being taken on the draft policy.
