In
recent years, NOAA Fisheries OLE has expanded working relationships
with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs). These
NGOs represent a variety of causes and constituents and
are an engaged stakeholders in the ocean environment.
- In the Northeast, the OLE is engaged with the See a
Spout, Watch Out! outreach campaign which focuses on
cetaceans off New England, primarily the endangered Northern
Right whale.
- In Alaska, the OLE has partnered with the Civil Air
Patrol to conduct patrols to protect Beluga whale from
illegal hunting.
- In the Pacific Northwest, the OLE is actively engaged
with the Be Whale Wise campaign. Primarily run through
Soundwatch this campaign deals with Orca whale issues
in and around Washington coastal waters.
In 2002, the OLE partnered with several organizations
to assist with, promote and implement the Suitcase for
Survival educational program. This targets middle school
students in educating them about the international trade
in illegal wildlife and wildlife products. The OLE participates
as a member with the World Wildlife Fund, American Zoo & Aquarium
Association and the Department of Interior's U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service.
