Non-Government Organization Partnerships (NGOs)

In recent years, NOAA Fisheries OLE has expanded working relationships with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs). These NGOs represent a variety of causes and constituents and are an engaged stakeholders in the ocean environment.

  • In the Northeast, the OLE is engaged with the See a Spout, Watch Out! outreach campaign which focuses on cetaceans off New England, primarily the endangered Northern Right whale.
  • In Alaska, the OLE has partnered with the Civil Air Patrol to conduct patrols to protect Beluga whale from illegal hunting.
  • In the Pacific Northwest, the OLE is actively engaged with the Be Whale Wise campaign. Primarily run through Soundwatch this campaign deals with Orca whale issues in and around Washington coastal waters.

In 2002, the OLE partnered with several organizations to assist with, promote and implement the Suitcase for Survival educational program. This targets middle school students in educating them about the international trade in illegal wildlife and wildlife products. The OLE participates as a member with the World Wildlife Fund, American Zoo & Aquarium Association and the Department of Interior's U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
