A Special Day

Illustration of Julia and Robbie's class room. Principal Raymond stood in the middle of the students - like a lifeguard. "Walk" he said sternly. "Pay attention to where you're going," he added, when Robbie almost ran into him.

Their teacher, Mrs. Fletcher, was ready for them when they slid into their chairs.

"Today is a special day," she began. "We're going to learn some important things today."

Julia nodded. She knew it was true.

"Let's begin at the beginning," Mrs. Fletcher went on. "Let's talk about terrorism."

She

explained that terrorism is the use of force or violence against people or property and that terrorism was supposed to create fear.

"Terrorists are criminals," Mrs. Fletcher said. "And when they're caught they are put on trial."

She explained that the police, firefighters, emergency management officials and the Department of Homeland Security all work together to protect the country from terrorism.

"But we have to do our part, too," she said. "We have to be prepared."
Robbie and Julia looked at each other. "Remember how Grandma knew what to do about the flood," whispered Julia.
