Abstract:

This data set contains coastline data in ESRI Arc/Info export and Arc/View shape file formats for the MMS Atlantic Region and into the Gulf of Mexico westward to Mississippi. Coordinates of points on NOAA's 'Medium-Resolution Vector Shoreline for the Conterminous United States of America' CD-ROM were used. Coordinates for points along the coast- lines of Puerto Rico and the U. S. Virgin Islands were taken from NOAA's 'Vectorized Shoreline ...' digital files. Coordinates for Canadian coastline and for other islands within the Caribbean were taken from the World Vector Shoreline. Coordinates for the Saint Lawrence River and State onshore boundaries were taken from the World Databank II.

Purpose: This data is provided for general orientation purposes.

Supplemental_Information:

The MMS is making its existing cadastre data available at <http://www.mms.gov/ld/Maps.htm> and on CD-ROM. These data will include digital images of MMS data at the regional, planning area, Official Protraction Diagram (OPD), and Supplemental Official OCS Block Diagram (SOBD) levels and digital spatial data in Arc/Info export or Arc/View shape format at the regional or planning area levels.

The coastline coverage was built using Arc/Info double precision. This polygon coastline coverage was topologically cleaned with Arc/Info's 'CLEAN' command using a fuzzy tolerance of 0.000000000004 applied to the coverage in longitude/latitude coordinates.

Completeness_Report:

The entire NAD83 coastline is shown for the MMS Atlantic Region. Note however that some of the small rocks and low water features chosen for the baseline may not be included in this coverage. Puerto Rico, the U. S. Virgin Islands, and adjacent areas of Canada, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean are also included.

The east coast and portions of the Gulf of Mexico coast were pulled from NOAA's 'Medium-Resolution Vector Shoreline for the Conterminous United States of America' CD-ROM. The coastlines for Puerto Rico and the U. S. Virgin Islands were pulled from NOAA's 'Vectorized Shoreline ...' digital files. Portions of the Caribbean and Canada (from Maine to the Saint Lawrence River) were clipped from the World Vector Shoreline. The Saint Lawrence River and the northwest boundaries for Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama were clipped from the World Databank II. These pieces were then appended, hand edited to close any gaps in the resulting polygons, and then cleaned to create topology.
