It provides a wide range of critical information on hazardous substances, including substance identification support, physical characteristics, human health information, and containment and suppression advice. It is available as a free, downloadable application on PDAs (Palm, Pocket PC) and Microsoft Windows(tm) PCs. When an Internet connection is available, WebWISER (http://webwiser.nlm.nih.gov/) provides access to the same functionality of the standalone applications and includes support for PDA browsers and some phones. WISER's information is extracted from the National Library of Medicine Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB(r)), a peer-reviewed database with comprehensive information on over 5,000 hazardous substances. HSDB is part of the TOXNET(r) system, a group of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health, and toxic releases.
