» More Information on Illinois Severe Storms and Flooding

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- In a continuing effort to provide up-to-date information to those affected by the Illinois severe storms and flooding that began June 1, the people of the Federal Emergency Management Agency have added an "Automated Status Update" function to its registration/Helpline.

With the help of the Automated Status Update, applicants are able to immediately check the status of their application for assistance and obtain basic information regarding their account. With this service, there is no need to wait to speak directly with a FEMA operator. By following a series of voice-activated prompts, the applicant may access information about their personal registration, eligibility status, financial compensation, the appeals process and other information.  Applicants still have the option of talking to a FEMA Helpline operator if they wish.  They must simply listen to the prompts to select Helpline assistance.

When accessing the Automated Status Update, applicants will be asked to provide their FEMA registration ID number, date of birth and the last four digits of their social security number.  If the applicant provides inaccurate information or makes an error, they will be forwarded to FEMA Helpline staff.

Residents of the 18 designated counties who sustained damages or losses during last month's severe weather can apply for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free registration/Helpline at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Individuals with hearing- or speech-impairment who have TTY equipment should call TTY 1-800-462-7585. Individuals also may apply online at www.fema.gov.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
