Indianapolis, IN -- Since the Presidential major disaster declaration of June 13, representatives of the federal government have been working to assist the recovery of Indiana residents who suffered damages and losses in the storms and flooding that occurred from April 28 thru June 7. The following is an update of their activities to date:
- Since announcement of the Indiana disaster declaration, FEMA has approved a total of 148 Disaster Housing grants to cover temporary rental assistance for those whose homes have been severely damaged and funds to make repairs essential to making a home habitable. To date, 287 area residents affected by the disaster have applied for assistance and more than $ 250,492 in federal grants have been disbursed.
- As of close of business July 1, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) had approved $ 213,100 in low-interest disaster loans. The SBA is the primary source of federal funds for long- term disaster recovery for owners of private property, including homeowners, renters, non- farm businesses of all sizes and private non-profit organizations. These low-interest loans cover costs of repair or replacement of damaged real estate, personal property and business assets not fully covered by insurance or other aid.
- Disaster Recovery Centers are now open at these locations but scheduled to close soon.

- Residents and business owners in Clay, Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Hamilton, Jefferson, Johnson, Knox, Marion, Martin, Montgomery, Owen, Parke, Perry, Pike, Posey, Putnam, Vigo and Washington counties who sustained damage or loss can begin the disaster application process by calling toll-free at 800 621-3362 or TTY 800 462-7585 for the hearing and speech impaired. Phone lines will be closed on July 4 but available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday thru Saturday thereafter. After calling to apply, people can visit a nearby Disaster Recovery Center to get additional information and/or receive help in completing their SBA loan applications.
