Damage Assessment Teams Tour Storm Areas To Determine Eligible Assistance

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Teams of disaster recovery experts from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and local officials are conducting assessments in the Bootheel and southern Missouri areas to determine what types of federal assistance may be offered as a result of damage from the January ice storm.
On January 30, President Obama announced an Emergency Declaration for Missouri authorizing Direct Federal Assistance (DFA). At the state's request, joint Preliminary Disaster Assessment (PDA) teams are now surveying damage in select counties.
Public Assistance (PA) teams are conducting surveys over the next several days in some of the affected counties to calculate the costs that local jurisdictions have already incurred in their emergency ice storm activities, as well as future anticipated costs.
FEMA leads and supports the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation, to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters.
