Cocktail content calculator

For drinks with two or more ingredients

How strong is your mixed drink or cocktail? It can be hard to know at times, and you could be getting more alcohol than you think. A mixed drink or cocktail can contain one, two, or more "standard" drinks, depending on the recipe. If you want to pace yourself, watch your intake, and stay within low-risk limits, it's important to know much alcohol is in your drink.

This calculator offers a few examples below. The actual content will vary depending on the bar, restaurant, or individual mixing the drink. If your drink is not listed among the examples, do some online research to find a recipe and the alcohol content of the ingredients, and enter them yourself. It will take a little homework, but it may help make you aware and inform your choices.

You can find the alcohol content for distilled spirits on bottle labels (or online), listed as both "alcohol by volume" (alc/vol) and "proof" (the alc/vol is half the proof). If you want to estimate the overall alcohol content of the cocktail, enter the non-alcohol ingredients including water or melted ice that will be consumed with the drink.

Disclaimer

This calculator is for educational purposes only, to show how the number of standard drinks and the alcohol content (% alc/vol) of a cocktail can vary depending on the type of spirits and the recipe. Any differences between the data you enter in the calculator and the actual amount in a drink could significantly affect the accuracy of the estimates. Because of this and individual variations in alcohol sensitivity and metabolism, the calculator should not be relied upon to predict blood alcohol level or any other measure. Do not drink if you are under the legal age (21 in the United States), and do not drive or engage in other potentially dangerous activities after drinking.
