Lesson Plan 4.2
Objectives:
The student will review the procedure for drawing escape plans.
- The student will understand the behaviors involved in escaping a fire.
- The student will learn how to conduct an exit drill in the home.
Time:
40 Minutes
Materials Needed:
VCR/T.V.

Activity: Approx. Time:
- Review home work assignment. Choose several students plans and discuss
the alternate escape routes chosen. Comment on choices where there is
a roof to get onto or a way available to get down from the 2nd floor.
Stress need for smoke detectors to allow more time to accomplish escape.
10 Minutes
- Review escape behaviors from sheet handed out in previous session.
Show "Home Fire Evacuation Video". 15 Minutes
- Distribute "E.D.I.T.H." handouts. Present procedure to conduct a
home fire drill. First one should be announced ahead of time so family
members can practice skills. List the procedures on the board.
- Have a family meeting
- Draw up an escape plan
- Decide on a day and time for the drill
- Choose a location for the fire and why
- Use paper cutouts to show the place of the fire
- Have family members use the best exit (primary or alternate)
depending on fire
- Have all who escape meet at meeting place
- Designate one person to go to a neighbor's house to call Fire
Department
- Conduct the drill
- Evaluate how everyone did
- Work to improve for future drills 15 Minutes
