Records of the United States Geological Survey (Record Group 57)
Descriptions of records of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) held by NARA's Civilian Records unit in College Park, Maryland, are now available in ARC. These records include records pertaining to predecessor surveys, surveys in foreign countries, and administrative matters.
Search Instructions
To read the descriptions of records from RG 57 in ARC; click the yellow Search button in the upper left corner of this page.
- Change the search type to Advanced Search.
- Limit the search results to 1000.
- Choose "Series" from the Levels of Description of Archival Materials list.
- Scroll down to the Record Group Numbers Filter and click the Lookup button.
- Type 57 in the keyword box and click the Go button.
- Click the All button.
- This will return you to the main search page.
- Click the Go button to search for all descriptions.
- Click the Display All Hits button to see all of the descriptions.
To narrow the search you can enter search terms in the keyword box. For example, entering "King Survey" will bring back series related to Clarence King’s survey of the Fortieth Parallel and entering "Brazil" will bring back descriptions of records of the Foreign Geology Section relating to Brazil.
To view digital images follow the following steps.
- Change the search type to Advanced Search.
- Limit the search results to 2000.
- Check the "Descriptions of Archival Materials linked to digital copies" check box.
- Scroll down to the Record Group Numbers Filter and click the Lookup button.
- Type 57 in the keyword box and click the Go button.
- Click the All button.
- This will return you to the main search page.
- Click the Go button to search for all descriptions with digital images
