Records of the Office of the Secretary of War (Record Group 107)

The records of the Office of the Secretary of War include records about the Civil War, World Wars I and II, claims against the War Department, and expositions.

Search Instructions

  1. Retrieve the RG 107 ARC description using this link: http://arcweb.archives.gov/arc/action/ExternalIdSearch?id=436
  2. Next, use filters to search within the RG. In the Archival Description Details tab, scroll down to the heading Includes, and click on the link for Search within this Record Group.
  3. An Archival Descriptions Search screen will appear with a filter for searching within Records of the Office of the Secretary of War, 1791 - 1947. You may conduct a basic search or an advanced search from this point. By default, ARC will search within all series, file unit, and item descriptions that belong to Record Group 107 ARC. To perform a basic search, enter your terms in the search box.
  4. To filter your search, click on the link for Advanced Search. Here, you can add keywords and designate specific materials types, locations, levels of description, and date options for your search. You may also set your hit limit to retrieve up to 2,000 hits.
  5. Press the Search button.

To narrow the search you can enter search terms in the keyword box. For example, entering "Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition" will bring back six series descriptions in RG 107 and entering "Catherinus P. Buckingham" will bring back descriptions of seven series created by or under the direction of Buckingham.
