EITC Awareness Day Partner Highlights

 

This document is a summary of some of the partner activities that will take place around the country during EITC Awareness Day on January 31, 2008. There will be 90 news conferences on Jan. 31 nationwide. Another 57 organizations will issue news releases. There will be 30 additional news conferences in the coming days.

Richmond, Virginia — Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Social Services, will hold a press conference to proclaim EITC Awareness Day across the commonwealth of Virginia. A press release will be issued as well.

Hartford, Connecticut — The Hartford Asset Building Collaboration will have a press conference with the mayor and state officials to kick off EITC Awareness Day in Hartford.

New York City — The Children's Defense Fund - New York is the lead agency in the NYC Tax and Benefits Disability Coalition. The coalition is thrilled to announce a forum on National EITC Day to help empower people with disabilities access the tax credits and benefits they deserve.

Albany, New York — The HV CASH Coalition will hold a kickoff event with various officials and press coverage in Poughkeepsie, New York. Sites in Beacon, Poughkeepsie, Dover Plains and Red Hook will be open for tax prep from 6-8 pm. The coalition covers Dutchess and Ulster counties.

Coral Springs, Florida — The Broward Prosperity Campaign will hold a volunteer pep rally at the Coral Springs family success center. Joy Cooper, Mayor of Hallendale and Sue Gunzburger, County Mayor will be on hand for this event.

South Bend, Indiana — The United Way of Saint Joseph County will participate in EITC Awareness Day. Mayor Stephen Luecke will promote the event at the South Bend Boys & Girls Club.

Lansing, Michigan — The Asset Independence Coalition will hold a news conference and distribute a press release. State Senator Mark Schauer will hold the press conference at the State Capitol. The governor will issue an EITC proclamation.

St. Paul, Minnesota — Media/Radio and local media will be alerted through the Twin Cities United Way and IRS Communications Staffers. Mayors of St. Paul and Minneapolis will be making appearances and their respective city sites. Planned Events:  Free Tax Prep and free E-Filing; Giveaways; Information Tables (Claim It! Partners); Goals:  Raise Awareness of EITC and Free Tax Preparations Services; Showcase Selected VITA Sites and draw attention to or "Celebrate" the State of Tax Season.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana — Media Blitz leading up to EITC Super Tax Day February 9, 2008 at Baton Rouge Community College; EIC Education and other community organizations providing information on asset building opportunities and other services; Taxpayer Advocate Office and TAP Rep from Louisiana attending.

San Antonio, Texas — Texas Governor Perry to issue proclamation on January 15, 2008 declaring January 31 National EITC Awareness Day in Texas. This event will be in conjunction with the disability initiative; and will be held at the San Antonio community center with 40 vendors that work with persons with disabilities or offer community services for persons with disabilities. The proclamation will be read and EITC material distributed. A press conference will be held with broadcasts by local television and radio stations.

Ft. Hood, Texas — Ft. Hood military base will publish an article in the base newspaper about EITC day that will reach about 45,000 soldiers. They are also scheduled to distribute a press release.

Midland, Texas — The Casa de Amigos Coalition will celebrate 40 years of free tax assistance in Midland. They will give special recognition to an ex-IRS agent who was instrumental in starting the VITA program with local CPAs. A press conference is also scheduled and local dignitaries have been invited and a proclamation for the city of Maitland will be issued.

Honolulu, Hawaii — The Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu will issue an EITC Day proclamation.

Las Vegas Nevada — Las Vegas Mayor Jim Gibson will issue an EITC Day proclamation.

San Francisco, California — The San Francisco Mayor’s Office and City Treasurer will hold a news conference and issue a press release.
