John Sloan 1871-1951

Overview: 176 paintings and graphics including photographs, postcards, sketchbooks, a sketch box, a diary, and other materials represented all periods of Sloan's career. Among the loans was The Wake of the Ferry from the Phillips Collection, which was also reproduced as a United States commemorative 8-cent postage stamp honoring the Sloan centennial. The stamp was issued on August 2, the artist's birthday, in his birthplace in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, as part of the American artists postage series. This exhibition, the 7th in the Gallery's series honoring American artists, was organized by David W. Scott with E. John Bullard and the artist's widow, Helen Farr Sloan, to mark the centennial of the artist's birth.
