Overview: 49 still life paintings illustrated William M. Harnett's trompe l'oeil technique. They were selected from the National Gallery's collection and other public and private collections.

The exhibition was organized by the Amon Carter Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Co-curators were John Wilmerding, visiting curator for American Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Doreen Bolger, curator, Amon Carter Museum; and Marc Simpson, curator, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The coordinator for the National Gallery was Nicolai Cikovsky Jr., curator of American and British paintings.
