Jan Steen: Painter and Storyteller
Overview: 48 paintings by the Dutch artist Jan Steen gave an overview of the artist's career. This first exhibition dedicated to Steen's work in nearly 40 years was drawn from the collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, as well as public and private collections in the United States and Europe. An audio tour was narrated by Alan Shestack, deputy director of the National Gallery.
The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery of Art and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., curator of northern baroque paintings at the National Gallery, and Wouter Kloek, head of the painting department at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, were curators of the show. H. Perry Chapman, associate professor of the history of art at the University of Delaware, was guest curator for the National Gallery.
The exhibition was made possible by Shell Oil Company. Additional support was provided by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
