Highlights
As part of its coral research portfolio, CSCOR administers three Coral Reef Research Institutes; the Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative in Hawaii, the National Coral Reef Institute in Florida, and the Caribbean Coral Reef Institute in Puerto Rico. The Institutes, although housed at academic institutions, are implemented as collaborative efforts between NOAA, the universities, and appropriate governmental agencies in these three jurisdictions. Similar to CSCOR’s Coral Reef Ecosystem Studies Program, the Institutes support and conduct ecosystem-scale research. However their direct relationship with the local resource management agencies provides science that is more responsive to local management needs in a timely manner.
