John Singer Sargent's El Jaleo

Overview: A focus exhibition of John Singer Sargent's monumental 8-by-11-foot El Jaleo depicted a flamenco dancer in a theatrical setting. El Jaleo was on loan for the first time from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. 7 related paintings, 40 drawings and watercolors, and 2 books on the Spanish dance theme were also included, on loan from public and private collections.

A special program consisting of lectures, flamenco demonstrations, and screenings of various film versions of Carmen was presented the weekend of March 28-29. Mary Crawford Volk was the guest curator for the exhibition, and Nicolai Cikovsky Jr., curator of American and British painting, was the curator for the National Gallery. The conservation and exhibition of El Jaleo were made possible by grants from NYNEX Foundation and New England Telephone.
