Current VacanciesSpecial ProgramsPermanent/Career Civil /Service EmploymentTo be a permanent/career federal employee, one must be a U.S. citizen. Permanent civil service positions are competed via internal government merit promotion announcement and/or external recruitment bulletins, which are posted on the Internet (see FDA Job Information). Temporary Civil Service EmploymentTemporary (or "term") appointments usually range from one to four years in duration and require U.S. citizenship. These positions are competed in the same manner as permanent positions but do not confer permanent status. Temporary appointments longer than one year may earn employee benefits. Temporary Post-Doctoral Employment (Federal)FDA Staff Fellows (Federal): Staff Fellows conduct research in many areas, including biochemical toxicology, genetic toxicology, reproductive and developmental toxicology, and neurotoxicology. Initial appointments do not exceed five years, but may be extended. Staff Fellows must have a Ph.D. or equivalent. Senior Staff Fellows must have a Ph.D. and a minimum of two years of appropriate post-doctoral research. All candidates must be U.S. citizens or resident aliens. Staff Fellows are eligible for the same employee benefits as a permanent civil servant. FDA Visiting Scientists: Visiting Scientists are scientists from various foreign countries and whose interaction and exchange of information with NCTR scientists may advance toxicological research. Initial appointments do not exceed five years, but may be extended. Visiting Scientists must have a Ph.D. or equivalent. Candidates must be foreign nationals (resident or nonresident aliens) and must possess a valid working visa. Visiting Scientists are eligible for the same employee benefits as a permanent civil servant, with possible variations regarding retirement and taxes, depending on the foreign country. Commissioned CorpsThe Commissioned Corps is a uniformed service comprised of officers who are health professionals from multi-disciplined categories. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, under 44 years of age, who have earned a qualifying health professional degree. Benefits are similar to those provided to officers in other uniformed or military services, including base pay, quarters allowances and subsistence allowances.
