Trails to Utah and the Pacific: Diaries and Letters, 1846-1869
Later Maps of the Western United States, Showing Railroads
Trails to Utah and the Pacific: Diaries and Letters, 1846-1869 includes 43 maps. These maps were produced by explorers, pioneers, and promoters before and during the period, including those on expeditions to survey for rail routes. Three later maps of the western United States are shown below as illustrations of the next phase of westward expansion. These maps from around 1880 show the railroads as they reached across the Rockies to the Pacific and the boundaries of territories that became the states. See the railroad maps digitized by the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress for many more examples.
