Federal Study Finds No Health Hazards From Past Oak Ridge Releases

No public health hazards occurred from past atmospheric releases of ionizing radiation, uranium, fluoride and hydrogen fluoride from the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant (ORGDP) is the conclusion of a public health assessment issued by the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).

Exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs -- a chemical used as a coolant and lubricant in electrical equipment) from the Oak Ridge Reservation does not pose a public health hazard, says the public health assessment released by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). However, as a public health precaution, the agency suggests residents limit eating certain types of local fish.

ATSDR is responsible for evaluating the potential health effects on off-site populations exposed to hazardous substances released from Oak Ridge Reservation. ATSDR has set up these presentations, at the request of the Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee, to provide background on DOE programs to assess worker exposure issues.

ATSDR announced today the availability of the final version of its public health assessment for the Defense Depot (DDMT) site in Memphis, Tennessee This public health assessment was written to evaluate new sampling data for the Memphis Depot National Priority List (NPL) site, to review existing data on the Dunn Field portion of DDMT, and to respond to health issues and concerns raised by residents living near the site. This health assessment is the fulfillment of a commitment made in 1997 by ATSDR to revisit the original DDMT health assessment which was issued in 1995.
