Description:
The meeting took place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands from August 31-September 4, 1964. From left to right: J. R. Pellett (University of Wisconsin), D. M. Hays (Los Angeles Children's Hospital), J. H. Fisher (Boston Floating Hospital), D. Vervat (Chairman of the Rotterdam Congress), H. B. Lynn (Mayo Clinic), Koop, and S. L. Gans (Los Angeles County General Hospital.)
Koop was a member of the Council of BAPS. One of the subjects discussed at the meeting was battered-child syndrome and the reasons why physicians often overlook maltreatment as a cause of fractures and other trauma among children. Domestic violence and child abuse became a major concern of Koop during his tenure as U.S. Surgeon General between 1981 and 1989.
This photograph later appeared in an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The citation for that issue is: Journal of the American Medical Association 191 (11 January 1965): 66.
