One Month Remains To Apply For Disaster Assistance

Lenexa, KS -- Victims of the storms and tornadoes between May 4 and May 30, who have not yet registered for federal disaster assistance, have only one month left to apply. July 7, 2003 is the last day to file applications for most disaster assistance programs, according to state and federal disaster recovery officials.
Homeowners, renters, farmers, agricultural producers and business owners who sustained damage are encouraged to apply even if they have insurance. Call the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free registration number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) to register for assistance. Those with hearing- or speech-impairments can register by calling TTY 1-800-462-7585. The telephone numbers are operational from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. CDT, Monday through Saturday.
Applicants may qualify for assistance under several state and federal programs such as disaster housing assistance, grants to meet disaster-related needs, long-term, low interest loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA), or farm loans from the Farm Service Agency.
"Even after the deadline, if you have questions about your application, FEMA will still be a telephone call away," said Mike Hall, Federal Coordinating Officer. "You can receive help by calling 1-800-621- FEMA (3362) or by visiting one of the Disaster Recovery Centers that are open in the area."
If the primary residence on a farm or ranch was damaged or destroyed by the recent disaster, state and federal assistance may be available by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). However, FEMA programs do not cover agri-business losses.
Farmers and ranchers can apply for assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency (FSA). For information on FSA programs, individuals should call their local county offices.
