Lenexa, KS -- Three new counties have now been added to the president's federal disaster declaration of May 6 following the recent tornadoes and flooding.

"The May 6 disaster declaration has been ammended to include Haskell, Meade and Seward counties for individual assistance."said Mike Hall, Federal Coordinating Officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). "Seward County is also eligible for public assistance."

Initially, Cherokee, Crawford, Labette, Leavenworth, Miami, Neosho and Wyandotte counties received the disaster declaration on May 6. On May 15 Anderson, Douglas, Osage and Woodson were added to the declaration for individual assistance.

Residents and business owners located in counties designated for individual assistance may be eligible for FEMA disaster housing assistance, low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to repair or replace storm-damaged property, or grants from the state for serious needs and necessary expenses not met by other programs.

Counties designated for public assistance may qualify for federal funding for the removal of debris and the repair of storm-damaged public facilities such as roads and bridges.

State and federal officials urge disaster victims in all the declared counties to call the registration number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for speech and hearing impaired persons. This is the first and most important step in receiving assistance.
