A MINUTE OF HEALTH WITH CDC
Fungus Among Us
Coccidioidomycosis — California, 2000–2007
February 12, 2009
This program is presented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC — safer, healthier people.
A recent study found that the incidence of coccidioidomycosis, often called Valley Fever, has increased substantially in parts of California. Valley Fever is an infection caused by a fungus that lives in soil. During dry periods, the wind blows the soil and spreads the fungus through the air. People who inhale the fungus and contract the disease often experience flu-like symptoms, such as cough, fever, and night sweats. Some patients develop a severe pneumonia. If you or someone you know has been in the southwestern United States and has any of these symptoms, check with your healthcare provider and tell him or her about your recent travels.
