Funded Program:
Assessment of Health Effects Associated with Volcanic Emissions

Program Description:
CDC funded the Hawaii Department of Health (HDOH) to establish a lung function monitoring program and asthma intervention for children from eight schools in Hilo, Hawaii, near the Kilauea Volcano. Currently, HDOH is finishing an assessment of the health effects that may be associated with potentially toxic volcanic emissions from the Kilauea Volcano. HDOH also is examining correlations between health status and indicators of exposure to bioaerosols in pediatric and working adult populations who have asthma or asthma-like symptoms and live near the volcano.
